Dr. Cherian Varghese has over two decades of experience with the World Health Organization (WHO), serving across the WHO India Office, the Western Pacific Regional Office, and WHO Headquarters in Geneva. From 2015 to 2022, he served as Coordinator for NCD Management, leading global initiatives including cervical cancer elimination and strengthening non-communicable disease programmes worldwide. Prior to joining WHO, he served as Additional Professor of Cancer Epidemiology & Clinical Research at the Regional Cancer Centre, Trivandrum.
He has played a key role in developing major WHO resources, including the WHO HEARTS Package and cancer pain management guidelines, while authoring 90+ scientific publications on non-communicable diseases and health systems.Academically, he holds postgraduate medical qualifications in radiation oncology and health management from India, as well as an M.Phil. and a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from Cambridge, UK, and Tampere, Finland. He is a member of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in Clinical Epidemiology.
